What Is the Numerology Triangle?
The triangle (or pyramid) method starts from your full birth date written out as digits. Those digits form the base of a triangle. You then add each pair of neighboring digits, reduce the sum to a single digit, and write it on the row above. Repeat, row after row, until only one digit remains — the apex of the pyramid.
Folk traditions read the apex as a summary number of the whole date, and some versions also read the numbers along the two sloping edges as "life stages." There are several regional variants; the one below is the most common form.
Step by Step: A Worked Example
Take a birth date of 17 August 1990, written day-month-year: 17-8-1990. Write out every digit:

Triangle Apex vs. Life Path Number — Not the Same Thing
Here is the part most triangle tutorials skip: the apex is not the Life Path number, and the two usually disagree.
The Life Path number — the anchor number of modern Pythagorean numerology — is calculated by summing all the digits of the birth date and reducing: for 17-8-1990, the day gives 1+7 = 8, the month gives 8, the year gives 1+9+9+0 = 19 → 10 → 1; then 8+8+1 = 17 → 1+7 = 8. So this person's Life Path is 8, while the triangle apex is 3.
The difference is structural. The triangle repeatedly sums neighboring pairs, so digits in the middle of your date are counted many more times than digits at the edges. The Life Path sum counts every digit exactly once. The two methods answer differently because they are computing different things.
There is a second, subtler difference: the standard method preserves master numbers 11, 22 and 33 instead of reducing them — a rule the triangle's row-by-row reduction cannot honor.
